Splinter

A drawing that had been sitting in my folder for some time that I wanted to get finished.

This is Sergeant Wilson, the leader of my team of marines from my on-off Halo fic. I've been growing to like him and his team more and more of late and this is the latest prototype for their combat armour.

I was quite happy with the pose and the perspective with this, although I was really worrying when it came time for me to put all that camo on. It was already getting pretty cluttered up in there and I'm still not sure if the camo has ruined it or made it better. Camo is a splinter style, one thing I certainly proved is its effectiveness at breaking up the outlines of the soldier.

Anyhow, I like this basic design. I might change around a few minor things (like where things like grenades and pouches go), but I think I'm going to keep the shape pretty constant.

NERDY TECHNICAL STUFF

I wanted to go with a suit well conforming to the body's natural shape so as to have maximum protection from all angles at minimum volume. The material is a nano-engineered composite, formerly constructed for maximum defence against projectile weapons, but now specially designed with layered ablative properties (similar to space-craft re-entry shields) to counter the Covenant's plasma weaponry. An ablative is a material that vaporises quickly and conducts heat poorly- if struck by a bolt of plasma, the first few layers of the armour around the impact will vaporise instantly, taking all the heat energy of the blast with it. The adoption of this system has drastically improved the survivability of a Coldar Marine in battle against the Covenant.

The suit is fully contained and offers protection from chemical and biological weaponry, using a powerful filter to purify air in highly toxic environments.

TL;DR: I'd favour my chances against a race of genocidal aliens a lot better wearing a suit like this.
