EDIT: Antak's polished his armour a bit, so I've made the gleam off the armour a bit brighter. The old version is here. Please tell me if you think this is an improvement.

Well, I think this is new record set for just about everything. Two weeks and two days from start to finish and what very well might be my best digital painting yet. :iconyeahplz:
So here we have my Halo fancharacter Antak Koadamee finishing off the last defenders of a UNSC space station, now with 100% more brutality. I never gave Antak a plasma rifle since they're such garbage in game, but when I stopped to think what a stream of what is basically pure energy would do to solid matter, it suddenly sounded a lot more badass. He still has his carbine, just not in this picture. :)

Antak's character is one of the Templar archetype- strict lawful good with a burning compulsion to seek out and destroy evil at any cost. Under the Covenant theocracy, that "evil" would be us. His swift and savage eradication of any and all human elements is to him, a moral necessity.

Inspired by my flatmate's comment that I needed to draw more graphic violence. You can collectively blame him for this. =P
All criticism greatly appreciated. I might make a few tweaks over the next week or so if I find things I can improve. :)

Nice job. Something about graphic depictions of violence seems to suit you well. :) (You can decide whether or not that's a compliment.)

I really like the lighting in this picture. Overall, there is really good contrast between the highlights and the shadows. While I am not an expert in plasma rifles by any stretch, I do think the additional light on the armor is an improvement. Plasma is bright and the armor looks like it should be reflective which you have shown in the edit. Great job. :)

Thanks very much! To be honest, I don't know why all my artwork and such has had such a violent flare to it. I theorised a few years ago that it's a vent point which gets it out of my system as I'm a completely gentle person in real life- I don't think I've ever hit someone or had anyone hit me.

I sometimes wonder if my general taste for high contrast is wrong, as a lot of people seem to go the other way and consistently have very low contrast. That said, this one I have no doubt that the flash of light would be quite brilliant. I think it was certainly improved by adding the extra glare- I'm not sure how much of the Halo series you've played or how in depth you've looked at it, but I like to think of the Elites armour almost as having a transparent glassy layer over the top of it, because presumably it's not just something as pedestrian as just metal and it's gonna have several layers.

I think I grew up to be peaceful because I have four older brothers. Any attempt at violence would be met with strong resistance and regret. I have no experience with Halo, but the armor looks like it should be reflective. I notice in my first comment that I was careful not to specify the material of the armor because I knew there was a significant chance it wasn't metal. :blushes: It seems my gut instinct was right.

Strong contrast is an element appearing in many of the great artist of history such as Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens. In fact, art historians even have an Italian word for it with its own Wikipedia page so you know it's legit: chiaroscuro [link]. (Yay for art history class...) Plus, all of the contrast helps make pictures dramatic which is a good compliment for the violent scenes you like drawing. :)

the detail here is just amazing, I love how the plama light reflects on his armor and how the light just pulls the attention of the viewer towards the main focus of this picture, namely the BLASTing of a PESKY human :evillaugh: Many of your previous drawings lack this pull of focus which makes this a great improvement :thumbsup:

my only critique is that the right bottom leg belt strap on the soldier looks abit off, it's hard to explain but normally a belt like this would make the pants fold up more and make the pants be wider than the belt because of the folding. hmm I can try find and example later on
but yea a daaaaamned awesome drawing, you just explained to me why Elites are awesome looking =D

Thanks very much! I really wanted to work with a primary light source which was actually in the frame. I think I got the general fall of the light right, although I think it shows up that I need to improve my metal textures.

I think I see what you mean with that belt. I think it's a bit flat in general, like it's not conforming to the shape of the leg properly.

Thanks again! I think I've finally created a scene which demonstrates their overwhelming physical power. :D

Glad you like it! I get frustrated seeing Elite fancharacters who are nice-guys so every now and then I have to turn Antak loose to restore appropriate levels of badassery. =P
